This screenplay by yours truly ties the death of Han from Tokyo Drift to Cipher, Eteon and more. While I think it's possible that it's Han we're seeing in the F9 trailer and spots, I think this will provide a good explanation as to how he returns, while re-visiting a scenario that brought another character back to life in a recent spinoff. I still think it's possible that we're introduced to Han's twin brother in F9, sticking with the brotherhood arc as we are introduced to Dominic and Mia's brother, Jakob. But ultimately, I couldn't envision how Han would escape from his car, as we saw the flames scorch the interior, and he was barely able to move. The overhead shots didn't suggest anyone pulled him out. So in this version, he dies, but not for long. Anyways, here is "Drift Connection"
Ext. TOKYO. NIGHTTIME.
Crowds gather around the deadly collision involving Han and Deckard. We cut to a POV shot from a bystander (side-view) who does a double-take as they witness Deckard drop an item by the victim's car and continue on, and as he gets his phone out, our person holds up their phone and snaps a headshot. (for continuity reasons, it's a 2005 or 6 mobile phone, otherwise everyone would be livestreaming and taking photos like crazy if it happened today.) As more people flock to the scene, we cut to Deckard, who hears the sirens, and casually exits the scene with his hands in his jacket pockets as if he were taking a late night stroll. He doesn't look back.
Our (B) bystander sees Shaw disappear into a nearby alley, then we slowly approache the victim's car. We hear "are they alive?" "oh my gosh." "get back." "who was in there?" We cut to a close up shot of Han's body, still hanging upside down, burned, broken, and slightly charring. He breathes his few last breaths, barely able to move a finger, then appears to pass out or die. We look around in panic, yelling "someone help me get this guy out!" The others are afraid to approach the torched vehicle. From a distance, we hear someone say "they're gone, man. Nothin' we can do". A nearby business (O) owner rushes out with a fire extinguisher, yelling "get back!" to everyone, and begins to use it on the car.
B: "Hey- careful, there's still someone in there bro!"
O: "I hear ya', there's a hose over there to the right of my shop- that should help!"
We grab the hose and manage to put out the flames, and cool down the hot metal. As the fire truck and ambulance approach, we struggle to get the driver door open, having to force it, and we hear a woman ask "is he alive?" as we quickly cut to black, getting less than a second to see what's left of Han.
LOCATION UNKNOWN - ext. shot of cargo plane in the cloudy sky
We cut to a panning shot inside, filled with highly advanced monitors, computer equipment, and dim lighting. In the background, a big screen is filled with multiple news feeds, tracking icons, and such.
From behind, we see a slender woman with her arms folded, one hand resting on her bottom lip as we zoom out, revealing a photo of Dominic Toretto on the big screen. Nearby, we hear someone yell “I got something!” Cipher shifts her glare from Toretto and approaches the desk, she removes an earbud from her ear, and is locked in on the screen.. Rhodes is standing beside the chair, and hunches over.
C: "Well, well.. look who it is."
R: (squinting) "What are we looking at?"
C: (presses buttons on keyboard as she says) "Not what.. (zooms in on Deckard) who."
R: (stands up straight) "I'll be damned. Where is this from?"
"Uh... mobile took the shot two minutes ago in... (typing then looks up) Tokyo.
R: (turns to Cipher) "So what, maybe he's taking a trip or something?"
C: (leans in to monitor) "No, no, Rhodes. No one would take a photo of Deckard Shaw unless he was up to something. (she stands up straight and to the crew says) Okay everyone, Deckard Shaw has been spotted in Tokyo. I wanna know what he's been up to. Tell me any reports of very recent happenings. I don't care if it's as small as a robbery or big as an explosion."
She gives our guy a pat on the shoulder and whispers "well done, Gibbons."
Rhodes turns to her as she walks away-
R: “He turned down our offer, so what does it matter?”
Cipher comes to a halt and turns to him…
C: “You know better than that, Rhodes. Either he’s coming for us for what happened to his brother or he’s gonna build this thing first.”
R: “Well, you’re always at least one step ahead. What’s next?”
C: (hunches over another person at a desk) “These guys are all about family. So that’s where I’m gonna hit ‘em. He took out two of my teams, so it’s gonna get personal.”
Rhodes, confused, turns back to her…
R: “Deckard?”
C: “No. But you’ll meet him soon enough.”
G: “Not much from the local cams but he was definitely targeting this other vehicle. (Cipher watches on another monitor at the desk) Looks like he dropped something by the car, and makes a call. (he turns to Cipher) Likely on assignment.”
Cipher stands up straight and announces to her team -
C: “I wanna know who was in that other car, I want names, aliases, numbers, everything.”
R: (to Cipher) “We can’t get someone there on the ground in time, everything will be cleaned up and gone.”
C: “You know me, Rhodes- I have people everywhere.”
He smiles big.
Meanwhile, we cut back to the crime scene. Twinkie (driving), Earl and Reiko speed to a halt, and approach the others gathered around. Open with a shot from the ground, beside the toasted car of Han. An officer picks up the infamous necklace, asks the people gathered around "anyone lose this?" His superior looks over, then around, as no one claims it. The crew look at eachother but don't know what to make of it. He shrugs his shoulders and continues with his notepad. Our officer looks around for the CSI, unsure what to do with it. He throws it to another nearby officer, who places it on the end of the fire truck (bumper) as the fire crew races past him.
Reiko breaks out into tears, being held by Earl, as Twinkie cautiously approaches the fire truck and grabs the necklace without being seen. Han’s body lies inside a bodybag, which is zipped up as they each get one last look at him. We see the examiner jot down the time of death, 1:27 AM. Twinkie shakes his head in disbelief as the tears grow strong and furious. Scattered ashes from the explosion grab their attention for moments. One of the (F) firemen is checking the car’s glove box, and manages to recover something. He brings it to an (O) officer. We see the photo of Gisele.
O: “Was she in the car too?”
F: “Not likely, we haven’t seen any sign of other passengers but we’ll let you know.”
(E) Earl and (R) Reiko approach them, honing in on the photo.
R: “Gisele?”
O: “You know her?”
They both shake their heads yes.
E: “Well, we never actually met, but we knew of her.”
Reiko, crying, rests her head on Earl’s shoulder.
R: “She was supposed to be here with him.”
The officer hands him the photo.
O: “They’d throw a fit with me giving this to you, but here ya’ go. (hands them his card too) You let me know if you hear or learn of anything, okay?”
They both nod yes. Twinkie stands by them, and Earl hands him the photo, which he glances at but turns his head as he can’t take it anymore. He gets out his phone…
Cut to the train station after Sean and Neela exit the train.
(S) Sean answers his phone…
S: “I can’t talk right now, man. We had to flee the scene. Han’s dead.”
T: “I know, we’re here right now. Listen, there wasn’t much left but we got a necklace and a photo of some girl. You come by tomorrow, we’ll meet somewhere safe, hopefully.”
Neela shakes her head in agreement as she wipes her tears away.
S: “Alright Twinkie, I appreciate it.”
S: (to Neela) “I never should’ve come here. Han’s dead because of me. (shakes his head as Neela holds his arm) I sure hope that other driver is okay.”
N: “It’s not your fault. Han chose his own path. You happened to stumble on it like we all did.”
S: “I am thankful I met you. But I don’t want us runnin’ on and on. I need to settle this.”
Neela thinks for a moment…
N: “Takashi.”
Sean nods yes.
S: (looks around) “Come on, we need to keep movin’. I want you safe.”
Ext. shot of a tall hotel in Tokyo. Cut to int. dark room. A slender figure lies on the bed, glaring out from high above at the night sky, we hear the sirens in the background as their mobile screen lights up. They sit up, and pick up the phone. Cipher appears on the screen (video call, advanced tech for this time courtesy of her and her affiliates).
C: “You ready?”
The female replies, with a low tone.
“Always.”
C: “I’m sending you the coordinates, you’re closest. I need to know who is in the bodybag. I’ve got your credentials loaded on the phone, so you’ll be good to go. Hurry, the CSI should be there shortly.”
“On my way.”
Back to the crime scene. Twinkie hugs Reiko and shakes hands then hugs Earl as the two depart the scene after being questioned. Twinkie continues talking with an officer, who is jotting down their statements.
O: (puzzled) “Ugh… one more thing.”
T: “Yeah?”
O: “He mentioned… ‘drifting’?”
T: (confused that he isn’t familiar) “Yeah.”
O: “Is that like, surfing?”
Twinkie shakes his head from side to side, then notices Cipher’s agent approaching the scene. She comes to a halt, showing her ID to some officers. They lift the tape and let her investigate. She glances side-to-side, a closeup on her face reveals some digital enhancements to her eyes, as she is capturing the entire crime scene.
The officer stares at Twinkie, waiting for an answer.
T: “Oh, my bad. Yeah, surfin’ ‘n shit like that.”
O: “Got it. Thanks for the info, you give us a call if you think of anything else.”
T: (sad) “You got it.”
The officer approaches Cipher’s agent as Twinkie turns back to look upon Han’s car. He gets his phone out again, and goes to tuck the photo in his back pocket but it falls to the ground as he takes photos of the car. He kneels down to capture more. We hear the officer say “(‘)bout time you showed up” (she is standing with back to camera) as he reads her phone screen. “Where’s the rest of your outfit?”
She replies: “On their way.”
(closeup) O: “Damn slackers. (he continues to jot down notes as he converses with her, being friendly) If you don’t mind me saying, you don’t look like a native. You from the states, (squints, guessing) Middle East?”
Revealing shot as we see that the officer is speaking with (G) Gisele, whom is fully intact, not what we’d expect from someone who fell on a runway at high speed. She glances to her side as she replies-
G: “I’m just here for work. (he continues writing as she looks around) But I feel like I was meant to be here. (silence for a couple moments) Anyways, I need all-access to this area, nothing gets in or out.”
O: “Of course, we’ll get outta your way in a few. Just let me know if you need anything.”
He exits past her.
G: “Thank you.”
Cut to Cipher, who is monitoring everything through Gisele’s eyes.
C: “Nice job, Superwoman. Satellites show CSI team should be there in 5 minutes, so hurry.”
G: “Understood.”
Back at the crime scene, Gisele walks past Twinkie, who rises up.
T: “My bad, I was just leavin’(“)
Gisele comes to a halt and turns to him.
G: (notions to car) “Your friend?”
T: (lowers head and nods) “Yeah.” He then looks to the ambulance that Han’s bodybag is in front of, waiting to be loaded. She looks at it as Cipher chimes in…
C: “There’s the prize. I wanna know who’s in there. No more small talk.”
G: (looks back to Twinkie) “Well, sorry for your loss.”
He nods in appreciation as she continues on. Twinkie exits through the police tape.
Meanwhile, Gisele unzips the bag, revealing Han. She stumbles back a few steps.
C: “What is it, what’s wrong?”
Gisele is speechless… but unsure why. Did I know this person? We cut to a quick shot of them in his car, from the end of Fast Five, with her sitting on his lap, holding him, as they speed away.
C: (to Rhodes) “Shit. Get her program up and running, we need to reboot.”
Gisele shakes her head, then refocuses.
G: “I’m okay. Sorry, I haven’t eaten all day. Holding for image capture (she stands looking over the body, forcing herself not to touch him as she covers her mouth, trying to hold back the tears as there’s something familiar about him). Transmitting now.”
Rhodes and Gibbons watch as the images bring up his information.
R: “We’ve got him, Cipher. File coming up now.”
C: “Throw it on the big screen, I want to know everything.”
Gibbons: (scanning through files) “Yakuza ties, amongst others.”
C: “Show me all known associates.”
G types as we see Dominic Toretto’s mugshot appear on screen first.
C: (smile grows slowly) “Well well, what a small world.”
R: “Is that the one?”
C: “That’s him, alright. But he’s next.”
Then, Agent Luke Hobbs appears on screen.
Cipher takes a step back…
R: “What, you know this guy too?”
C: “No… (another smile slowly surfaces) but I know someone who does.”
She turns and presses against her earpiece…
C: “Make sure that body doesn’t leave the scene. Gibbons (she snaps her fingers at him as she fiercely walks away) is sending you an upgraded file you can show them.”
G: “Got it. What about CSI? (looks around) They’re gonna question me…”
C: “I’ll take care of it. Those idiots already tampered with everything, I’ll stall the others. Stay put.”
Gisele folds her arms, glancing around. She then looks to the ground, and spots the photo of herself. She is still as her arms slowly unfold. She looks at Han’s car, then to his body. She is flooded with gifs of memories as she holds her hand over her face, trying to hold back the tears. Twinkie re-emerges from her right, to retrieve the photo, as she turns to hide her tears.
T: “Sorry, dropped something. Am I okay to take this?”
G: (folds her arms again, pretending to be busy) “Of course.”
T: “Thanks.” (he tries to catch a glimpse of her, as she has a familiar face, but he merely glanced at the photo when he first saw it, so he picks it up and continues on)
Gisele glances back to see him exit again, she turns and is lost, dumbfounded. Now it makes sense why she’s in Tokyo. They were going to settle down here. But did she choose to work here?
Back to Cipher, who enters her room aboard the plane as the door slides shut behind her. She has her phone to her ear, with a look of satisfaction on her face.
C: “Looks like we’re both gonna get our revenge. And wouldn’t you know it, they’re not even a quarter-mile from eachother.”
Int. We zoom out from a screen, displaying the ‘car-accident’ in Tokyo, then reveal a grid of screens covering multiple news outlets. Cont. to zoom out to a figure sitting in a chair, on the phone with Cipher. The mystery man replies…
M: “You’ve been busy.”
C: “I figured you were already watching what’s going on in Tokyo…”
M: “Amongst other places.”
C: “I’ve got another one for you…”
M: “I’m listening.”
Cipher opens a laptop and brings up Han Lue’s file.
C: “He’s gonna be your in to Luke.”
The shadowy figure rises immediately from his chair..
M: “Hobbs?”
C: “I told you I’d take care of you. By the way, your Superwoman needs some reprogramming.”
M: “Who is the subject, how bad off are they?”
C: “Han Lue. He’s not a well known name, but he’s certainly got some dangerous ties. Pronounced dead at… 13:27. But, (scanning) everything’s still intact. (she scrolls through Gisele’s photos of him) Gonna need skin graphs, amongst other repairs and enhancements.”
M: “That’s our specialty. We’re still working on Brixton but I want Han delivered right away. He’ll be our backup against Hobbs, incase Brixton fails.”
**To stay in line with the continuity of “The Fate of the Furious” and the “Hobbs & Shaw” spinoff- The Eteon director (our Mystery man conversing with Cipher here) never planned on Hobbs nor Shaw being recruited to recover the ‘Snowflake’ virus, he was going to have Brixton recover it, and keep it safe back at HQ. Then, he would have Brixton track down Hobbs and unleash his fury. Since Brixton failed, they shut him down. Cipher already had a plan to have Dom betray his family, so she wasn’t planning to use a genetically enhanced and brainwashed Han, this was for the director himself to get revenge on Hobbs. But since her plan ultimately failed in Fate, she too could use Han to infiltrate Dom’s crew, which includes Luke Hobbs. So this sets up what I think could happen in F9: The Fast Saga**
Cipher scrolls through the remainder of the known associates, then notices Gisele’s photo. She scans past it at first, then goes back. She is stunned. Silent.
M: “Are we clear, Cipher?”
C: (hand over mouth) “Small, small world.” (big smile)
Cut to black screen.
